THOUSAND OAKS, CA – BrogdenBay Presents and Larry Janss’ Four Friends Gallery launch a series of live music concerts in Thousand Oaks. The first concert in this latest series is an evening with Jim Kweskin and Geoff Muldaur, Sunday December 4, 2016 at 7:00 pm at the Four Friends Gallery, located at 1414 East Thousand Oaks Blvd. in Thousand Oaks.
While Jim Kweskin and Geoff Muldaur are appearing as a duo, it is important to place them in the context of the Jim Kweskin Jug Band. The rock critic Ed Ward once listed the most important bands of the early 1960s as the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, the Byrds, and the Jim Kweskin Jug Band. Apparently thinking that some people might be surprised to find the Kweskin gang on that list, he added: “I’m not kidding.”
The original “Americana” band, playing everything from classic blues to hillbilly country, ragtime, jazz, and rock ‘n’ roll, they capture the legendary 1960s mix of exuberant anarchy and heartfelt sincerity. Jim Kweskin is probably best known as a singer and bandleader. He also created one of the bedrock guitar styles of the folk revival, adapting the ragtime-blues fingerpicking of artists like Blind Boy Fuller to the more complex chords of pop and jazz. Geoff Muldaur was already a known factor when he joined the jug band, and he went on to lend his soulful vocals and brilliant arranging skills to a wide range of influential groups, from Geoff and Maria to Paul Butterfield’s Better Days to his own dazzlingly varied solo ventures.
Brogden Bay Presents organizes live music performances in southern California by some of the country’s finest musicians, typically in an intimate format of 200 people or less. These concerts are part of a working relationship with Four Friends Gallery founded by Larry Janss. The seed for Brogden Bay Presents was planted when Steve Brogden was director of Thousand Oaks Library where, for eight years, the Library and the Thousand Oaks Library Foundation hosted monthly concerts. Other recent concerts include A.J. Croce, Albert Lee, Corky Siegel and Danny Kortchmar. Limited seating is available in this intimate setting. Tickets are $35 each and are available at www.brogdenbaypresents.com.
THE JIMMY V 3 with Jimmy Vivino (guitar), Mike Merritt (bass) and James Wormworth (drums) will perform on January 14, 2017 at 8:00 pm. Vivino currently serves as the Music Director on the TBS late night show CONAN. He has been a consistent element in O’Brien’s late night career, starting with the first episode of Late Night with Conan O’Brien in September 1993. Vivino divides his time between recording sessions and live gigs throughout the country. In addition to his solo work, Vivino plays with The Prisoners of 2nd Avenue, Rumble & Twang with Lee Rocker, The Barn Burners, The Rekooperators, and the successful Beatles tribute band The Fab Faux. Vivino has also recorded and played live with such legends as Johnnie Johnson, Hubert Sumlin, Levon Helm and Al Kooper. Earlier in his career Jimmy got his start producing, playing and arranging for such artists as Phoebe Snow, Laura Nyro, John Sebastian and Donald Fagen.
Mollie O’Brien and Rich Moore will appear on March 25, 2017 at 8 p.m. Grammy Award winner Mollie O’Brien became known to the rest of the world as a singer’s singer in 1988 when she and her brother Tim released the first of three critically-acclaimed albums for Sugar Hill Records. She has recorded five equally well-received solo albums. Mollie also appeared regularly on Prairie Home Companion from 2002 – 2005. Rich Moore is a powerhouse guitar player who can keep up with O’Brien’s musical twists and turns from blues to traditional folk, jazz to rock and roll, and is known to produce some of the funniest onstage running commentary. Rich has toured and performed with a variety of artists including Pete Wernick (Hot Rize).
Danny O’Keefe will appear on May 6, 2017 at 8 p.m. In the 1970’s, Danny O’Keefe put out a string of albums that cemented his reputation as being among the best songwriters of his generation. These days, casual fans know him best for his Top Ten hit “Good Time Charlie’s Got The Blues” or Jackson Browne’s version of “The Road” from the classic Running On Empty album. But the story didn’t end in the 70’s. Danny’s songs have been recorded by a Who’s Who of artists over the last thirty plus years: Elvis Presley, Cab Calloway, Charlie Rich, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Earl Klugh, Conway Twitty, Leon Russell, Dwight Yoakam, Jerry Lee Lewis, Jimmy Buffett, Judy Collins, Donny Hathaway and John Denver, and many more.
